I could see a dark mass huddled against the register of the vent, and once I freed the metal register from its tight hold on my ceiling, my friend and I met eye to eye. “Well hello there.”
In my cold hand, against my fuzzy coat, he closed his eyes, as if resigned to his fate. I imagined him thinking, “I’m too cold to care what happens next.”
